2013 Trend #6: Pantone’s Color of the Year: Emerald

I first heard the word “Pantone” about two weeks ago.  I was ordering a patch design from my uncle in VA and I sent him a picture of the black and grey that we wanted.  He wrote back and asked if I knew the “Pantone” color.  HUH?  I asked around and found out what is was.  (I should’ve just gone to the husband, since he’s a graphic designer…I just had no clue what the word meant.) At any rate, Pantone, for those who don’t know, is a company out of Jersey that is known best for their “Pantone Matching System” or PMS. (lol)These color names and numbers are used by a variety of industries, primarily printing, but also in colored paint plastics and fabrics.

Emerald….Pantone’s Color of the Year! 2013

SO, how do you incorporate this shade of jade into your world in 2013?  Well, that depends.  The best part about this idea of a “color of the year” is that it can be a nail polish color or your hair color.  You choose how to incorporate it into your look.  We dare you to sit down with a spring fashion mag and count how many times you see garbs and accents in this glamorous green! This color really looks good on any hair color, too.  We have already begun to see Emerald all over the runways for spring 2013 collections….have a look, below at what we found.

Polish your fingers or toes with one of these shades!

2013 Trend #7: The Arab Spring from Jeremy Scott

When you hear the term “Arab Spring” you normally do not think of a runway fashion show.  Maybe that was the intention of designer Jeremy Scott…but after viewing his 2013 Spring line, I’m thinking maybe he was inspired by the movement that has been going on since 2010 in the middle east.  You can see the arabic inspired prints and the flowing veils, but there’s a risqué feeling to most of these designs.  From the mesh see through tops (again, we see the MESH!) to the golden machine gun charm clad dress, most of these outfits would get you into some SERIOUS trouble in many places in the middle east.  Maybe that’s the whole point of Jeremy Scott’s line…pushing the envelope and highlighting the contrast of the prints and styles seen in that area of the world a MAJOR edge.

The hair styles featured in this show were very sleek and classic ponytails with a two strand twist in the back. To make the twist in the back super long, the hair designers used TONS of fake hair with the model’s hair twisted into the extensions.  This design looks sharp and sleek, allowing the clothing designs to shine but still looks very polished.  If this design is something you have ever thought about doing, maybe for an event or night on the town…come see us at 514 and let’s play with your hair!

Check out the video of his show below to see some of the behind the scenes with hair and a few of the Arab Spring designs:

After seeing Jeremy Scott’s show online, we started seeing similarities in Scott’s spring designs and images from the past…

On the left, a Jane Birkin design from the 60′s, on the right Jeremy Scott spring 2013. (Again with the MESH!) Don’t mind the boobies…. :)

On the left we have Sasha Baron Cohen as the infamous Ali G and on the right, Jeremy Scott spring 2013, lol. Stay golden?

Pictured on the top are designs from Jeremy Scott spring 2013…below are those wacky ladies from Sex in the City 2….because this is how you dress for an excursion in the desert. OY.

….in conclusion, we really love the ideas behind Jeremy Scott’s spring collection, we just wanted to point out some funny similarities. Here’s to pushing the envelope and making new designs out of something that isn’t normally viewed as fashionable….

2013 Trend #5: 80′s Icons

Jean Paul Gaultier had a few famous look-a-likes on the runway for his spring 2013 show.  This goes to show you that fashion is constantly recreating itself and what was old can be a new trend.  Seems that more and more 80′s trends are in the stores these days, looks like a bunch of Vanessa Huxtable sweaters in all the windows at the stores in most malls!  It’s still TOO SOON for me to even begin to think about wearing ANY 80s inspired clothing, seeing that I was born in the 70′s…I lived though it, and I’m not trying to go there again.  I guess that it’s kinda how my mum felt when I was rocking ringer tees and navy dungarees, it reminded her TOO much of her youth, lol.

Oh Vanessa….your fashion rings volumes even now in 2012….

So when looking at images from Gaultier’s show, we wanted to see the icons he featured side by side with the runway images.  Looking at hair from the Gaultier images, Sade seems to be the most classic.  The slicked back bun is just timeless.  The rest seem a little outlandish, but if that is your cup of tea, you should come see us and give it a shot!

David Bowie on the left and Bowie for Gaultier Spring 2013 on the right.

80′s Boy George on the left and Mr. (Miss?) George from Gaultier Spring 2013 on the left.

80′s Grace Jones on the left and Grace from the Gaultier Spring 2013 show.
NOTE: We are also seeing a return to the “box” cut seen here, a’la Kid and Play!

Madonna from earlier in her career on the left and Gaultier’s Spring 2013 replica on the right. This also goes with the surplus of MESH we are seeing on the runway, too!

Check out the smile on Mikey Jackson on the left, then Gaultier’s Spring 2013 MJ on the right. NOTE: I’m new to S. Cali, but I see MORE HATS here than I have ever seen on the east coast, so that is DEF a trend, locally!

Sade, the classic beauty with a voice to lure anybody into “the mood” haha, on the left and Gaultier’s Spring 2013 version on the right.

2013 Trend #4: The Gatsby Effect

With the upcoming remake of “The Great Gatsby” in 2013, we are seeing a return

to the looks from the “roaring 20′s”.  Check out the trailer below:

We are seeing not only women’s looks inspired by the 1920′s, but men as well.  Ladies chopped their hair into short bobs to symbolize a new freedom in the feminine world.  This style showed everyone “You’ve come a long way, baby.”

The 20′s were a time of parties, booze and music, the trends certainly reflected that.  Waistlines dropped, ornaments in short ladies bobs, pastel suits for the men…check this video from Flannel’s Spring line featuring all of these looks!

Men’s hair has a more classic look, “dapper dan” if you will.

Below are more looks based on the 1920′s only on the 2013 runways:

In Living Color

When I was a kid, I had this Barbie doll that you could put pink streaks into her hair with a “magic” wand and the minute you ran it under cold water it disappeared. I tried to do the same to my hair one night but had a difficult time getting it to come out completely and my mom was pretty upset. This experimentation has led me to where I am today: a hairdresser with a desire for change and a thirst for knowledge. This same type of experimentation has been used for thousands of years: Egyptians mixed black charcoal and animal fat to comb thru their hair, probably to cover grey. Gauls and Saxons dyed their hair various, vibrant colors to show rank and instill fear in enemies on the battlefield. Babylonian men sprinkled gold dust in their hair for similar reasons. Greeks and Romans used vegetables, plants and animal matter to achieve different looks. And in the Baroque period, royalty used elaborate powdered wigs in shades of pink, yellow and blue.

Today, we have much more effective (and safer) means to temporarily color our hair with vibrant results. Kevin Murphy recently came out with a product called, “Color Bug.” It is colored hair shadow that gives a range of possibilities: from pastel to vibrant, ther series currently contains pink, purple, orange and white. Besides giving streaks of color, it can also give texture and volume to the hair. The white color bug illuminates any hair color, giving the illusion of hilites and it can even be used as a pocket “dry shampoo.” The color bugs are able to do this through the two key ingredients, Mica and Talc.

It’s Not Just the Leaves that Change in the Fall!

Gloria just gave our newest team member, Andra, a whole new look for the autumn season!  Think you could use a little spice for the change in weather?  Come on in for a chat to plan your next move!

Andra was a very dark brown to begin with and had hot pink pieces throughout her hair (see upper left picture). Gloria did this design in two steps, first removing the dark color (see bottom left picture) and then a dimensional color placement.  By choosing two reds, only slightly different in color, Gloria gave Andra a red that has depth instead of just one flat color.

Changing of the seasons means changing up your hair design!

Day Six (my favorite day of this whole adventure!)

So like I had mentioned before, when I made reservations for Cochiti Lake, they didn’t allow just Friday night, you had to reserve both Friday and Saturday, so, twist our arms, we had to stay another night.  It was really a treat to be able to wake up and not have to quick pack up camp and get on the road.  Plus, when I woke up, I was just fascinated with the beautiful scenery…

Day Five

So today we woke up SUPER early to be sure to catch the sunrise…it was very chilly, so it seemed as if the coffee took extra long! I blogged while Jon watched the coffee with eager anticipation for the delicious percolated treat….

So we packed up camp in Nashville and headed for Oklahoma. We were off our track, time wise, but we would at least get to the OK state line by tonight. We definitely wanted to get through AK today.

Day Two

This was the path of our travels for day one. We wanted to make it to Newport, TN, but having not slept the night before, it was Statesville (or “States-VULL” as they say) North Carolina.

I’m Still Here… but this pic is before I (and my brother Joaquin) came to Studio 514.

Hey, I’m Matt, the guy building the overall site… (code and such.)

The crew at Studio 514 and I are working diligently on building a really really slick site full of true character and style. While we are at it, I’ve been asked to get a blog up for Andra who is coming out from Virginia to join the staff. Andra is pretty cool I’ve heard and she’s going to blog about her trip… including pictures. So check it out ok?

As far as what I think about Studio 514′s work, I wrote this on Yelp, “This is one of those reviews you kind of don’t want to write because the more great reviews the busier the place becomes the harder it is for the place to stay as great as it is.”
